The program was nurtured in 2014 after the realization that there was an acute shortage of specialized Pediatricians willing to work outside Kampala. The faculty wanted to generate homegrown specialists with rural affinity other than urban affinity which was get rich quickly driven. The program is a hybrid course that took into consideration the similar programs run by MEPI-MESAU affiliated Universities in Uganda and South Sudan.
