Entrepreneurship Development and Management: An Overview
This is a 3year programme, leading to the award of Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development and Management (EDM) degree. The Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development and Management examines the role of entrepreneurship and management in creating and/or growing ventures in everything from large corporations, to small businesses, the not-for-profit sector and community organizations. Entrepreneurship and management is vital to all aspects of the community and is applied to many disciplines including: business, information technology, science, engineering, the performing and creative arts, hospitality, fashion, digital media and the not-for-profit sector, public and private sector as well.
The program is designed to provide students with an appreciation of the processes, risks, rewards, motivations and societal impacts of innovation and entrepreneurship within regional, national and global perspectives. It aims to develop and inspire individuals interested in creating innovative futures that influence markets, economies and communities.

This program has unique features, including:
  • Tailored courses in the highly revered critical skills area of entrepreneurship that focuses on preparing graduates that have the generic small business and corporate innovative sense, which is expected to foster excellence in public and private sectors for social services delivery. There are tailored courses such as Foundations of Entrepreneurship, Management of Small Business, entrepreneurship Venture capital, Entrepreneurship Strategy, principles of Management, Resource Mobilization Strategies etc.
  • A wide course range rolled out to equip a strong foundation in Entrepreneurship Development and Management, combined with contemporary lighter skills of creativity and innovation, Critical thinking and decision-making, Business Communication, computer skills and entrepreneurship strategy, business ethics and social entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship Operations Management, among others;
  • Contemporary focal areas of small business prospects, such as SME Sector management, Business innovation, financial markets and Investment, Sustainable business growth and expansion.
  • A field attachment component at the end of 2nd year and 3rd years to enable students get hands-on experience and application of principles and techniques learnt in engaging real life problem solving; as well as, appreciating the demands of work ethics and employment responsibilities in an entrepreneurial development and management perspective.
 
General objective
  • The fundamental objective to the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development and Management programme at Busitema University is to inculcate in the students an ability to assess and analyse information using basic tools for analytical thinking, good judgment, entrepreneurship, leadership and other critical managerial skills.
Specific Objectives:
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
  • Provide innovative and interdisciplinary undergraduate courses of study that enable students to exercise analytical and imaginative thinking and make well-founded ethical decisions;
  • Educate the new generation of leaders for the 21st century capable of shaping the society with vision, justice, and clarity;
  • Appreciate individual disciplines in business and management sciences, and the necessary techniques for dealing with the economic, social and political environment of corporate entities, especially with regard to quantitative techniques and communication skills;
  • Provide adequate response to the managerial, administrative and leadership requirements of government and industry;
  • Develop the knowledge, analytical ability and balanced judgment to solve business problems.
 
Learning Outcomes:
The students who complete the EDM degree will be able to:
  • Scan through the environment and be able to identify economic gaps then convert into businesses opportunities
  • Start up and nurture of infant businesses for growth and sustainability
  • Write business plans for funding or strategic planning purposes
  • Communicate effectively and professionally and demonstrate the ability to create coherent written and oral statements with the diverse audience across the cultures;
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and evaluate relevant information for decision-making and make usage of diagnostic thinking skills and analytical techniques;
  • Appreciate the importance of teamwork and group dynamics in achieving organizational goals and demonstrate ability to work effectively in teams;
  • Describe various leadership styles and demonstrate proven ability in exercising these styles according to the requirement of the situation;
  • Acquire awareness of global diverse perspectives and appreciate the theory, operations, and challenges of global business;
  • Demonstrate effectively practicing of overall functional business knowledge and ability to identify and interpret essential business concepts, principles and skills; and
  • Identify core organizational values and appreciate the issues of ethical and social diversity based on ethic, gender, religion, and culture and demonstrate the ability to propose feasible solutions to these issues.
 
Target Group
The Programme targets the following categories of students:
  • Holders of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent.
  • Diploma holders from recognized institutions.
 
Opportunities for Graduates:
 
Opportunities for graduates exist in government, public and private sector. Besides the graduates will be in position start personal businesses given the skills they would been acquitted with during the course.
