Medicine and Surgery: An Overview
The course content is designed in an integrated manner to enable the students to appreciate the integrity of the whole human body functioning. So, relevant content in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and microbiology pertaining a given aspect is grouped together. Horizontal integration breaks down the boundaries between disciplines like: Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry that otherwise would be taught independently but concurrently to provide a package of learning experiences of the Biomedical Sciences. This eliminates the traditional methods of teaching medicine along specific lines of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and microbiology. It also eliminates compartmentalization and minimizes repetition of subject content. Vertical integration ensures that all levels of the learning spiral are integrated, thus students are exposed to Basic Sciences, Clinical experiences and community health activities right from first year.
